I have always loved etymology. I got that from my grandfather. He was a newspaper editor. He tried to make a few dollars in his eighties and nineties, by translating books. He taught himself Norwegian at ninety.

I wish I could be as motivated as he was.

A thing I remembered a thing - we encountered cosmos in the gardens of the park we visited. I photographed a lot of flowers, but I did not capture any cosmos. Or, if I did, they are too faded to recognize.

I caught some of Meachem and Dyson, but I think I fell asleep mid discussion. I have enjoyed seeing both of them over the years. I love how the Morning Joe staff teases him, especially about Shay’s rebellion.

I have missed seeing Meachem. He used to be a morning fixture on the show, but had to step back when he became a Biden advisor. I will have to put his book on my list, so we can discuss it more.

I purchased a book to read while traveling. “Carrie Soto is Back”. It received reasonable New York Times reviews, but so far, seems like “beach genre” reading. I had trouble downloading while en route, because the graphic cover was misleading. It seemed as if the book was not opening, but it was. I figured it out when I came home. I suspect I will finish it off soon, and then I will schedule Meachem next.

I have not listened to Ultra yet. For reasons I do not understand, I have trouble relaxing enough to pay attention to youtubes and podcasts. And now, more frequently, tv shows. I force myself to sit down at least once a day to watch something, uninterrupted by tweets and news alerts. I try to set aside an hour a day. It is challenging for me to just kick back.

This week, I have been working on “Succession”, which received a slew of awards. If you have not heard of it, the story centers on a Powerhouse corporate family., Waystar. They run media firms and theme parks. The family last name is Roy, an obvious reference to some European words for king. One son is Roman Roy, and one daughter is Siobhan, nicknamed Shiv. Again, references are blatantly obvious. It has been a week, and I am barely through the second episode.

Back to Maddow. The podcast has resulted in numerous articles referencing the insurrection she is covering. So I have been learning about it second hand. What a crazy story.

When I was a young girl, in the year 1822
I used to seek pleasure, ooh
When I was a young girl, ooh, I used to drink ale
Out of the ale house down into the jail house, oh==Feist - When I Was A Young Girl

Just got off the phone with Ukraine

Tough week in their city, multiple missiles.
Lost water, power, light, internet. They are all safe and everything was repaired.

Many of the poets chosen do not typically spring to mind when one thinks of children’s poetry. There are authors one recognizes as children’s writers, such as A.A. Milne, Jane Yolen, and Mary Ann Hoberman, but Paschen also includes Stanley Kunitz, Sylvia Plath, W.D. Snodgrass, and Maxine Kumin—great contemporary adult poets. ----Listen to This
An appreciation of the tongue-twisting and incantatory mix in a new anthology of children’s poetry.
