PermalinkThe Village People performed at Trump’s inauguration. A lot of people were
upset because the Trump administration is vocal anti about a lot of rights.
They have for instance barred trans people from serving in the military.
And declared there are only two sexes, with the term gender not to be used.
The leader of the Village People was interviewed leading up to the
inauguration and proclaimed that the YMCA song is in no way a gay anthem.
“The writer was gay, the singers were gay, and our first album was gay….
But we’re not gay”. Okey dokey, dude. And btw, being a gay anthem didn’t
“ruin the song”. Being a gay anthem is what made it famous and made him
tons of money.
Incidentally, more often than not, songs that are “gay anthems” are
designated so by the GAY COMMUNITY. Not directly by the performers.
Some songs by Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, and Dolly Parton I can think of,
are “gay anthems” but only because the gay community designated them so.
