I don't think the Russians were buying time in 2014, so much as I think they actually needed to hurry up and get all this done before elections. They thought they'd have until december to overthrow ukraine, instead they had to rush and get it all done before may. They were just setting the stage to say "I told you so, we tried to warn you and you wouldn't listen" so when war starts, they can blame someone else.

Meanwhile, in 2014 Yanukovych sent out a statement that USA needs to get involved and prevent war , it's all the Kyiv neonazi fascist Junta's fault. Shut up, asshat.

I often wonder, when Russians have relatives in other countries, don't they tell them what is really happening on the other side of the Putin curtain?
And even if they don't believe them, don't they EVER wonder "why can America see our channels, but we aren't allowed to see any of theirs?"
