I take care of two babies
Babies are hard work, we want the best for them
“Her voice was low and pleasant. I hadn’t heard it that much.
“I’ve talked to them on the phone. Never met them.”
“What are they like?”
“Well, they only call me when they’re upset. Sam gave them my number for
messages, because he doesn’t have a phone.”
She waited patiently for the explanation.
“They’re kosher, you know,” I offered.
“Yes.”
“Well, his mother’s kind of hysterical. I always speak to Mr. Rosen. He’s
the one who calls.”
“Is that his last name? Rosen?” She smiled as if she’d discovered a secret.
“Yes. He’s in advertising, but I guess he’s out of work most of the time.
He seems nice, always trying to understand. It was funny, the first few
times he called. The school was writing him nasty letters. He’d call and
ask for Sam. I’d have him call back later and try to get hold of Sam in the
meantime. Sometimes Sam wouldn’t come. When he did, it wasn’t very good.
Sam’s always pleasant to everybody, very polite. But not to his parents.”
She stared at my face, listening, wanting to know everything about him.”
