The QB must always throw to a person receiver. If you throw a ball to "no one" (to any blank space on the field) specifically just to get rid of the ball to avoid being sacked, it's called intentional grounding (IG). Normally it's just a penalty and loss of down, so if you IG on first down and get called, you lose 10 yards and get to second down. So it's like they give you the yard loss you probably would have gotten if you had just been sacked.
But if you do it in the end zone (under the field goal uprights) you get a "safety" instead.
A safety means 2 free points for the other team.
You can't go back 10 yards because you're already as far back as you can go (under the uprights) without being in the fan seats, so you lose the ball to the other side completely.
And the " safety" means the opposite team gets 2 free points.
There are a few different ways to get a safety (2 free points). This is just one way.
